This track from 16-year-old Matt Ryder is an unexpectedly impressive debut release. ‘Breakdown’ was written, performed and produced by the Birmingham-based teenager. He describes the bold, beautiful tune as “reminiscent but familiar. It was a way of me coping with confusing teenage feelings, which one day won't matter. One day the seemingly awful things we experience will fade and no longer matter”. The almost Latin percussion merges with minimalist, jazzy guitar licks and a delicate harmonised vocal line, yet he isn’t afraid to change up the texture when necessary.
